In order to maintain a high standard of user experience on Instagram, the company’s User Operations team will delete inactive accounts after a certain period of time. This is a feature that allows Instagram to provide a safe and consistent environment for its users. User Operations deletes accounts that have not been active for at least 185 days. Accounts that have been deleted will no longer be able to post content or access any other account features.

If you have a backup of your old password, then you can log in with that account and change the pass. If you do not have a backup of your old password, then you will need to reset the password by clicking “Forgot my Password?” on the login screen or by clicking on Forgot My Password? in the Mailing Preferences section on the Registration tab if you are an alumni.
